As John Lennon impacted us through his music, he has managed to impact us politically as well.
While Lennon was with the Beatles, his impact was extraordinary but not as merely big as to when he went solo. Although, one particular quote that shows how big their popularity was during the time is shown by Lennon when he said:
We’re more popular than Jesus now; I don’t know which will go first, rock n’ roll or Christianity.
This quote not only goes to show how significant the Beatles were during that time but it also played a big impact because Lennon chose to compare himself and his band to Jesus. Lennon continued to make strong statements like this as he left the Beatles. Although, as he left the band it gave him more of an opportunity to discover himself and what he believed in, rather than what the whole band did. Lennon began to become more serious about what was going on in the world and wanted to make a change. It was as if it was a whole “new” Lennon. His fans began to admire him even more because of these changes and his power to want and fight for one thing, peace.
When Lennon began his new music, fans could easily see Lennon’s opinions and beliefs. For example, in one song called God, his lyrics stated:
I don’t believe in Magic. I don’t believe in Iching. I don’t believe in Bible. I don’t believe in Tarot. I don’t believe in Hitler. I don’t believe in Jesus. I don’t believe in Kennedy. I don’t believe in Buddha. I don’t believe in Manta. I don’t believe in Gita. I don’t believe in Yoga. I don’t believe in Kings. I don’t believe in Elvis. I don’t believe in Zimmerman. I don’t believe in Beatles.
As Lennon career continued, his opinions also continued to get only stronger and more honest. However, his main importance and focus was peace and he never stopped aiming for it. His passion and fight for peace were heard in his songs. For example, in one song called Imagine, he expresses:
Imagine all the people living life in peace. You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one. I hope someday you’ll join us, and the world will be as one.
Lennon knew that many thought he was just another man trying to aim for something impossible, but he wanted to let the people know that he wasn’t alone and that there were many others out there trying to achieve the same thing. Lennon never gave up on achieving peace and did everything he possibly could to reach it. Lennon said:
If everyone demanded peace instead of another television set, then there’d be peace.
This made our society realize that it was possible to gain world peace and Lennon and Yoko Ono did all they could to ensure this. During their honeymoon, they spent their time in bed at the Amsterdam Hilton Hotel for a week between March 25-31. This huge event, known as the Bed-Ins for Peace, was an opportunity for them to protest about the war and promote peace. It attracted worldwide media and their second Bed-In was even bigger. Three months later, Yoko and Lennon sat in bed at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal. There, Lennon and Yoko wrote a song that will forever be remembered, “Give Peace a Chance.” The song was quickly taken up as an anti-war anthem and was sung by a quarter of a million anti-Vietnam-War demonstrators in Washington, DC on October 15, the second Vietnam Moratorium Day.
Lennon did everything he possibly could to achieve peace and that’s why he is still remembered today. Others were so influenced by Lennon because of his strength and willingness to never give up. Others may disagree with the beliefs of Lennon but for me, I know that Lennon is a man that I will forever remember because of his power to try to achieve such a big thing in life. He fought and fought for not only his rights, but our rights as well. If Lennon could see that he truly made such a big difference in others people lives, he would be so proud. That’s all he really wanted, was for people to know that they too could acheive something and I feel that’s why Lennon pushed for peace. He wanted the world to see that it could be done and because of this main reason, I believe Lennon’s political impact will forever be remembered.
